Dioptra presented the idea of scanning a hydro-electric power plant to a local municipal power company and a year later was asked to proceed with the project. The initial request was to scan the intake, the turbine itself, and the outflow tube. However, once the client saw the technology at work and viewed the finished scan, they asked that the remaining areas of the power plant be scanned as well. The plant’s internal shape, tight spaces, damp environment, and lack of lighting posed many challenges for the scanning and registration of the point cloud, but with careful planning and a helpful crew, Dioptra successfully completed the project. The data is being used as a training tool for the plant maintenance staff (due to federal regulation on shut down times) as well as a “show and tell” on tours in an immersive Computer Assisted Virtual Environment (CAVE).
